Hello all! I would just like to say this....We should all remember that technology is the base of the ST universe, so to that end we have transporters that can take personnel to events in sim promptly. Why not include transporter hubs, eliminate flying then we can all dust off our favorite ships and show em off! The AAC members should really be supportive of this plan, as we love to fly ships! So all AAC prsonnel please VOTE! Transporter hubs just add one more layer of scripts to the sim, causing even more lag than is necessary. ... Not to mention that it'd be a PAIN to get anyone to come to the roleplays if they can't accept a transport for some reason. Overall, banning flying avatars is a NUSANCE, not a feature. Let's keep the shuttles for those who enjoy using them.

Ok.. I'm going to come at this from a builders perspective as thats what I know best Working on larger but often just more complex projects you often have the need to change your perspective to see how things are looking from another angle. Ok sometimes walking to the other side works, but flying above the project and looking down on it, circling around it and so on is much more practical. A blanket ban on flying takes this ability away. However I generally agree that having people flying around in shuttles looks far more attractive than having them just fly with their avatar. Perhaps a greater selection of free shuttles, in addition to the one given out in the welcome pack, is needed to encourage this? I beleive someone is looking into in-sim transport options anyway so maybe this is worth considering as part of that. If there is one thing that annoys me, it's those d**n sims where flying is disabled and you have to slowly walk everywhere. Please don't make Galaxy and Aeon like this

From a RP perspective, it doesn't make a d*mn bit of sense to have flying enabled in the sim. I don't recall any character from any of the series or movies that just jumped into the air and started flying. What are we? Star Fleet personnel or superheroes?
My best RP in SL has been sims that have flying disabled. What may d**n annoy you, might be what others revel in.
So I offer a compromise to this argument since it is either fly or no fly and no one has offered a compromise. Why not make one of the sims a no fly sim in which it is a true RP sim (meaning in that sim we have to display our rank while in uniform, refer to each other by our ranks, act as if we were truly in SF, etc.) and have the other sim fly enable in which builders can use to work on their projects.
Any problems with this compromise or countercompromises?

The problem with that suggestion is that both sims are also residential areas where people may wish to choose to relax and not have to wear uniform so its hard to implecate. On top of that there is also the fact that in those areas people may wish to fly around. I really think its a non issue, I dont see people flying around in RPs that much to consider that its a problem.
However that said it would add more realism to the sim if you have to use a shuttle or transporter, perhaps the Air Corp would be kind enough to run a regular transport shuttle service around the sim?

We had those before in Galaxy and they were a bit annoying, also it takes away the fun elelment of having Air Corp Pilots there you can ask for a lift.

the former automated shuttles were also unable to be ridden from place to place.

While I cannot speak for anyone else, Air Corps or not, I would have no problem with volunteering to shuttle people to and from the regular RPs, or during event weekends. However, I doubt you would ever get consistent, full-time shuttle service around the sim if it required a non-automated pilot.

As for the IC only sim, I would LOVE to have that happen, but... look at the crop of roleplayers we got now. We got a GREAT bunch, but MOST people here in Starfleet couldn't RP their way out a paper bag. THERE, I said it, OK?

One of the issues is that the area that has the sandbox could also be the same area that has the roleplay sets. That would be a major inconvenience for builders, since not everyone can afford flight scripts, jet packs, etc since Linden Labs decided to do away with the stipend for basic users. A good roleplay host should make it known to the participants that, during the session, flying is not permitted. If a person is caught in fly mode, when they aren't supposed to be, then it's up to the roleplay host to handle it - first through IMs, and then taking it up the chain of command (if the person doesn't seem to want to listen). That should not apply, however, to those who are choosing to fly in order to arrive at the event. Worst case scenario, perhaps we could have our scripters develop a HUD for roleplay hosts, tactical event hosts, etc. That HUD could have basic access to region controls, including turing fly on and off (in case it really gets out of control and everyone's flying when they shouldn't be), and banning (to give an immediate way to handle griefers who might show up at any roleplays). It would only affect the specific area where the events are held, and not anywhere else in the region. Just a thought!

Those are some good thoughts Zania. Hopefully we all can work to some type of agreement on what will work for all of us here.

Personally, I am in favor of no-fly zones. I keep my own land no-fly except group officers. It allows me to somewhat restrict access to areas where I don't want people to be. I find it very distracting and annoying trying to focus on a topic during a meeting with people hovering about just outside the window.
From a security standpoint, griefers can't get away as fast when they can't fly. This allows time to identify the person, take photos, and gather other information for any reports.
I also agree that the sims should be 100% RP. I try very hard to stay in-character anytime I am online. Last I checked, Star Trek did not have people flying about on a regular basis. And as for residents, I think even Starfleet officers are permitted to "hangout" in civilian clothing when off-duty in their own quarters. If that's not the case, then the residents should remain in uniform. If they don't like that, then maybe they should not be living in a RP sim?
Dwain Knight said:"However that said it would add more realism to the sim if you have to use a shuttle or transporter, perhaps the Air Corp would be kind enough to run a regular transport shuttle service around the sim?"
I have spoken with the Air Corps Chief about this and we are seriously considering putting this into action. We will be contacting our pilots to see how many would like to volunteer. We are considering something like the DO board, where pilots could sign in as "on-call" taxi service, or maybe will just fly a pre-determined route like a bus or rail line. I think it would also be cool to offer visitors and new Cadets sight-seeing tours of the sims.
For now, this idea is just in the planning/discussion stages. If more develops, we will make an announcement in the forum under the Air Corps group.
Gret idea. Thanks Dwain!

I voted no flying, only shuttles cause its unrealistic... but i beleive the sandbox if galaxy has one, should be fly zone. unrestricted.

The more I read about this thread, the less hesitant I am about making it no fly... after all, Jet Packs will still work in no fly zones, and it is easy to set the sandbox up as flyable. Consider my vote changed from "Yes Flying" to "Present, but not voting"

Just giving this a bump.
Is there a final date for voting?
