The creation of this thread came from an idea by Olivia Nephilim, and her post proposed the following:
creating the Daystrom Institute of Technology as the primary base for experimental research. Originally I had thought of this as a pure rp "hang-out" spot, but after some reflection over other members input, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for Starfleet officers and academy cadets to complete personal endeavors with the aid of more seasoned ones (or failing that, extensive tutorials and things of that nature) or to collaborate with colleges on projects ranging the full spectrum from trivial to global concerns.
I envision many terminals with Star Trek canon to aid fledgling role-players with proper terminology and important concepts particular to the Star Trek universe (probably taken from other web sources, but cited and available in-game for rp value). Essentially, this will be a library of sorts, where members can be authors of textbooks or of other scholarly works (i.e. I’m working on a few issues of the Starfleet Cybernetics Journal for this purpose) and perhaps could catalog “historical” events (descriptions of interesting rp sessions) and Starfleet personnel and medical records (biographies and such). It would be easier to have all these resources on the forums and whatnot, but I don’t see why we can’t have both! Perhaps there could be Holodeck simulations that act as tutorials for common projects people wish to do themselves (regardless if what they wish to create is prevalent or not), such as ship construction or avatar improvements. This will be considerably advanced, so I’m not too concerned with this at the moment, but it would be nice.
Now what makes the institute so special is that virtually anyone can contribute, regardless of qualifications or experience. Not everything will be pretty, or functional, but that’s not the point; one receives a great sense of satisfaction from doing things themselves, or exploring beyond their reach, and the institute should nurture this.
What I’m proposing is very extensive (might be over-extending myself a bit ), and perhaps might not be feasible due to in-game limitations such as number of prims allowed and so forth. Although I wish to aid in the creation of this, I do NOT want to be solely responsible, nor do I want any one person to take this burden… the whole point is so that everyone can participate in a meaningful way. This is a long term project and will not be completed any time soon; but content, ideas, and other contributions can start right away and depending on the interest in this resource, its completion might be expedited.
