This is a proposal for a decentralized system of course management/administration at StarFleet Academy SLQ.
Please note that this policy is still tentative and pending Senior Staff approval.
Main points:
- appointment of an Academy Superintendent and an Academy Dean for each discipline to coordinate the teaching for their specific discipline.
- Deans are responsible for reviewing the submissions for new courses for the Academy.
- Submissions must comprise course notes, prerequisite list, assessment procedure, and instructor(s).
- Academy Instructors will come from non-Academy staff, who will then be granted a joint subdivision and Academy appointment.
- Commandant approval is required before a course can be offered to the SL public
- Scheduling of classes will be two tiered: basic classes will run regularly; more specialized classes will be advertised for students to enrol and a class time set after that.
EXAMPLE PROCEDURE
1. A member would like to see a course on "Terraformation".
2. She goes and does some research and feels confident it would attract widespread interest.
3. She writes out her lecture notes and speaking script with the help of an 'expert' in the field.
4. She approaches that expert to be an additional instructor for that course.
5. An assessment in the form of a practical landscaping project is decided between them.
6. The officer presents her idea to the Dean of Engineering.
7. The Dean approves of the course and refers the proposal to the Academy for processing.
8. The Commandant reviews and approves the course to allow it to be offered to the public.
9. The instructor is added to the SFA group as an accredited instructor.
10. The instructor fixes a time for the class(es) and notifies the Academy to publish the schedule.
11. The students attend the class(es) and take the final assessment.
12. Students who pass are given an appropriate accolade.
13. Course completion is added to their record.
