A Plea to not use the holodeck for Roleplay Sets
By Talon Lardner
I know some of you may be thinking of ideas for the new sim, and some them include having a holodeck for housing the roleplay sets. Personally, I feel this is a VERY BAD idea, and here's why I feel this way.
1. Holodecks limit what a RP lead can do.
Due to the size limitations of a Holodeck, We would no longer be able to enjoy the large set we have been blessed with recently. We would no longer be able to enjoy multiroom sets, but rather now be stuck with only working with bridges to RP on.
2. Holodecks cause sets to be static.
A good RP set is a flexible set. Good sets constantly evolve to fit the roleplays it hosts, and to adapt to new scripts and inventions brought into it. Already, it's a pain and a half to get a set updated... Imagine it being even worse if an engineer has to repack it into the holodeck.
3. Security issues galore
Imagine... You're playing a medic, your hands deep in the middle of a surgery, you're in the zone, you're texting your heart out... then BOOM! Everything dissapears because some cadet thought it would be a hoot to turn off the set. "Make it so that only certain people can turn on the set" some would say. But that would kill any type of spontaneous roleplay, and make it a pain to find a RP Leader to turn it on for you.
4. Holodecks are hypocritical for resource allotment.
Why is it that the roleplay sets, one of the, if not the top attraction to, the sim is the one that is forced to get cut back and other buildings are put up that will rarely get used to their potential, like huge buildings dedicated to Security and Engineering? Why do we have huge fluff rooms that won't ever get used, and the one thing that gets used the most we have to get cut back on?
This is just my opinion, and I am open to ANY critique, conterpoints, or comments you may have to this point of view.
Thank you for your time.
